Masterclass

Low vision does not have to prevent one from living an active, healthy, and fulfilling life. Click below to see how the Visionaries have mastered their hobbies and how they have adjusted to live life to the fullest.

Cooking as a team with Tom and Sandy

Sandy was determined not to let a low vision diagnosis and respiratory condition get in the way of her cooking. By working together with her husband, Tom, Sandy can still enjoy cooking for herself, friends and family.

“We’ve figured out who does what to make things easier, to continue to have me cook in the kitchen.”

Using a magnifying glass with Jill

For Jill, magnifying glasses have been essential in helping her with daily tasks. She uses a variety of magnifying glasses depending on her situation.

“My advice would be to try different magnifying glasses, to see if they can give you the comfort that they have given me.”

Lighting while out and about with Jill

When leaving home with low vision, it’s important to be aware of how lighting can make things harder. Jill always carries a flashlight, so she can get around safely and comfortably, even in the dark.

“My flashlights help me to see any changes in the floors, like bumps and kerbs, especially when everything is the same colour.”

Lighting at home with Jill

Lighting around the house can be just as important as outside. Jill has made small tweaks to her lights at home to make life easier.

“I always make sure to adjust the lighting in each one of the rooms of my house. This helps me to accomplish the tasks that I need to do in each one of the rooms.”

Organising around the house with Joe, who supports his wife, Jill

By making sure items are organised around the house, Joe can help Jill, to find things on her own and maintain her independence.

“Jill keeps her clothes organised by colours and by styles, and making sure that when I put things back, they go exactly where they belong, so that she can find them easily.”

Making adaptions around the house with Tom, who supports his wife, Sandy

After Sandy was diagnosed with low vision, Tom made several adjustments to their home to make life easier.

“The strips we put on the steps make it easier for Sandy to see the steps when she comes out of the house at night.”

Guiding your loved one with Joe

Joe balances safety with supporting Jill’s independence when he guides her. Communication, and giving Jill space are important.

“When we go out shopping, I walk behind Jill to make sure she’s safe, without constantly holding her hand, giving her control of her own situation.”
